What Makes Cataract Surgery in Ontario So Complex?

Artificial Lenses Are Effective but Have Limitations

Cataract surgery replaces the eye’s cloudy natural lens with an artificial lens. The surgery itself is covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

The standard artificial lens provided through OHIP funding restores clarity and focuses light, but it does not adjust between near, intermediate, and distance vision the way a healthy natural lens can.

As a result, many patients require glasses after standard cataract surgery—sometimes for more than one distance—even if they did not regularly wear glasses before.

Many Enhanced Options Are Available

Enhanced testing, technologies, and lens options can greatly improve the likelihood of reducing dependence on glasses after surgery. However, these options are generally not covered by OHIP, and no option can guarantee that glasses will never be needed.

Surgery Can Take Place in Different Settings

Cataract surgery may be performed in hospitals, not-for-profit surgical centres, or private facilities. Each location may offer different levels of enhanced testing, technology, and lens options, adding another layer of complexity for patients and families.

Helping You Make an Informed Decision

CataractLens.ca does not recommend one option over another. Its purpose is to provide clear, balanced information to help you understand your rights, your options, and the questions to ask your providers—so you can make the decision that is right for you.
